P&G’s Old Spice campaign is a textbook example of what the entire company should be doing. The problem is that the entire company isn’t doing it. Check out Mr. Clean’s Twitter stream, for instance. Oh, right—he doesn’t have one.

His tool, Dr. Farid said, would ideally be a vehicle for self-regulation. Information and disclosure, he said, should create incentives that reduce retouching. “Models, for example, might well say, ‘I don’t want to be a 5. I want to be a 1,’ ” he said.
Not a bad idea. It’s getting ridiculous how much retouching is being done these days. But unfortunately, money is the motivator here — people want to see this, want to be like this.
And these art directors and editors know that, so they continue with the facial-kerning and the tummy-smoothing and boob-ballooning. Maybe if people know it’s fake they’ll take a pass, but I’m not sure about that.
I don’t visit StarTribune.com often. But when I do, I remember why because the experience makes me want to throw chairs.
Holy! That’s brilliant.
Facebook should stop playing “Hide-and-Seek” with posts published using non-whitelisted third party apps
This is my first post on the Ciceron.com blog — if you’re a digital marketing nerd like me, let me know what you think!
wow
OOH SHIIIIT.
Manhattan mini-storage always has awesome ads like this. A few years ago it had one that said “Your closet is so narrow it makes [Dick] Cheney look liberal.”
Oh, Manhattan Mini Storage. “New York: Seven Professional Sports Teams and the Mets” (or some variant thereof) was one of my favorites. Along with the one that says if you store your stuff with your parents it means you have to visit them.
Best.
Heh. They have a good copywriter over there, for sure.

I’m still not growing a mustache. They didn’t do the same ad with John Ritter. Yeah, exactly.
Good grief. I hate politics these days. [Hint: Ad placed by a Ron Paul supporter…]
Brands hope to spark a lively, poignant or funny conversation that will have a life of its own. The comments from users and their friends have the ability to become a corresponding sponsored stories.
Facebook Launches First Agency-Designed Ad Unit | Digital - Advertising Age
I think I like this idea. Although perhaps “hope” by brands seems a little naive. But I suppose if brands ‘control’ the conversations, the ads could remain positive only. Seems like a great way to try and control positive AND negative sentiments.
Incidentally, one of life’s great mysteries is why the New York Times is spending tens of millions of dollars building and promoting its easily-circumventable paywall, when it could have built a first-rate Groupon clone instead. The NYT has the exact home addresses — and the associated email addresses — of hundreds of thousands of well-heeled newspaper subscribers in a rich city of tiny neighborhoods. It also has a sales force which talks to local businesses regularly. It should own this space in New York City, instead of ceding it to arrivistes from Chicago who have much less specificity as to where exactly their subscribers live.
Good post.

Cool image. Good idea for the campaign.

Indeed. Great video put together by purplefeather.co.uk
Google is also adding the ability to vote plus-one on search ads. Internal tests have shown that plus-one votes increase clicks; Google won’t charge for the functionality, but expects better ads to return more plus-ones and, in turn, more clicks. Higher click-through rates can improve quality scores, meaning marketers with better ads could pay less for a given keyword or position.
Google Adds Own ‘Like’ Button in Foray Into Social Search | Digital - Advertising Age
Google adding ‘+1’ to advertising as well. Smart. Facebook does this, too, but in kind of an indirect way. Ads don’t have a ‘Like’ button on Facebook, but if your friend ‘likes’ the advertiser, then I think it says so.
Very cool single-take commercial.
Explore Minnesota with Solid Gold and Joe Mauer. I wonder how many takes it took to pull that off?
I am in love with this!
Well done!
The new ad format is part of CEO Tim Armstrong’s plan to “to redesign the internet,” which means decreasing the sheer number of ads blasted at readers and selling them for higher rates. The company has over the past year shaved away many of the ad banners and boxes that are on many of its pages, resulting in a 25% drop in revenues from 2009 to $2.41 billion last year. Devil is a way to supplant those cluttered ads with premium, higher priced placements, drawing in more brand-focused companies.
AOL’s First Big Change for Huffington Post: Bigger Ads: News Aggregation Site Will Get ‘Project Devil’ Ads, but Will Anyone Else?
I’ve seen this bigger ad size with other publishers, but this quote is the new interesting overall strategy — fewer ads that are bigger sold at a premium. And it looks like this plan causes a sharp decrease in revenue and then enables an increase in revenue. Well, the first part has been confirmed, at least.
The code name for this plan is “Project Devil”, btw. Hm.
