Mugshot Monday - “’Unofficial’ FRWD" coffee mug with Bike Fuel Blend by Just Coffee
It’s Labor Day today and I am not at work.
I’m sitting on my front porch in South Minneapolis enjoying a cup of coffee in my ‘Unauthorized’ FRWD coffee mug.
It seemed a fitting day to post this mugshot because I now work at FRWD, a digital marketing agency in the Minneapolis warehouse district. More specifically I am Director — Digital Strategy and Production at CYCL, the creative arm of FRWD.
I’m stoked to be working with Chris Henderson, John Grudnowski, Aimee Reker, Kathryn Duncan, Doug Moore, and the entire FRWD family. It’s a tight group of very talented people. I feel very lucky to be here.
Allegedly, an ‘OFFICIAL’ FRWD coffee mug is in the works. On Friday, I grabbed a plain black coffee mug from the FRWD kitchen and stuck one of the decals on it. Pretty cool prototype I must say!
Happy Labor Day to you and yours!

Mugshot Monday - “Cape and Tiara” coffee mug by Curly Girl Design with Guatemalan Dark Roast by Peace Coffee
Today is the first day of school in Minneapolis for my boys and this is my wife’s coffee mug. It says:

“I am fairly certain that given a Cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world.”

My wife is a clinical social worker at a middle school — she’s back to school today, too, but her kids start next week. Not only is this mug inspirational for her, but also to the kids she sees who happen to look at it on her desk.
I LOVE the spirit of this coffee mug. I have three boys and I guarantee they’d totally wear a tiara if it gave them the bit of extra confidence they’d need to save the world.
The coffee mug is designed by Leigh Standley of Curly Girl Design. Here’s where you can buy a Cape and Tiara mug, although the design is a little different than my wife’s mug. Still a lot of awesome, though!

Mugshot Monday - “Deneen Pottery” Norg Tankard mug with Empty Rowboat IPA by Lake Monster Brewing — with special guest, Chris Henderson!
I’m not drinking coffee in this photo.
Deneen Pottery was kind enough to send me two mugs recently — one for really good coffee and one for really good beer. So today Chris and I indulged in a tasty IPA brewed by the newest Minnesota microbrewery and tap room, Lake Monster Brewery! They’re getting busy building out a new space in the Vandalia Tower complex located at 550 Vandalia Street in Saint Paul (Read all about it on MN Beer Activists). Congrats!
Chris and I go way back — we worked at City Pages together. Recently he founded CYCL — the creative arm of FRWD — and as luck would have it, needed a guy like me on his team. And now we’re redesigning and launching (soon!) the new Lake Monster website. The new site is going to be fabulous.
Cheers!

Mugshot Monday - “Disappearing Dinosaurs” coffee mug with Guatemalan Dark Roast by Peace Coffee
You can totally tell I’m drinking HOT HOT coffee in this coffee mug. It’s one of those heat sensitive mugs — the dino-skin magically melted away when I poured my cup of coffee this morning revealing the dinosaur skeletons!
Thanks to my new coworker Linz Kieffer for lending me this coffee mug! Because it’s awesome. (Btw, that’s Sue behind me if you were wondering.)
Here’s an animated GIF of the Disappearing Dinosaurs. I may need to buy my own!

Mugshot Monday - “Flag of Colorado” coffee mug with Guatemalan Dark Roast by Peace Coffee
This is the only *Colorado* coffee mug I bought on a trip to the Rockies this summer.
There were MANY MUGS to choose from — I posted a gallery of the ones I didn’t buy here and I did buy a “I <3 YURTS" mug, but that was more about yurts than it was about Colorado.
I was amazed that this flag design was introduced in 1911 — it really holds up, I think. I figured it was something new, but check out how the flag’s design evolved:

The flag was designed by Andrew Carlisle Johnson in 1911 and adopted by the Colorado General Assembly on June 5 of the same year. However, the legislature did not specify the size of the “C” or the exact shade of blue or red. Thus, some flags were in slightly different colors and had the “C” wholly within the center stripe. On February 28, 1929, the General Assembly added to the description of the flag that the blue and red would be the same color as the flag of the United States. On March 31, 1964, the legislature further dictated the diameter of the gold disc to be equal to the center stripe.

Best state flag I’ve seen, I think! Well done, Colorado!
I’ll be posting more photos from the trip, but here’s one of my favorites so far. I miss Colorado already.

Mugshot Monday - My Great Grandfather’s “Think of me” coffee mug with Guatemalan Dark Roast by Peace Coffee
I love the story behind this coffee mug. It belonged to my Great Grandfather Karl Hoessel and was given to him by my Great Grandmother Kate. My mom tells me back when they were in love and recently engaged, Kate sent Karl this coffee mug when he was away studying at the Lutheran Seminary in Buffalo, NY.
The coffee mug says “Think of me” on the side and has a decorative mustache protector — Great Grandfather Karl always had a beard and mustache, my mom said. I love this. Most mugs have a message that reflects the owner’s likes/dislikes or point of view. But this coffee mug is so intimate. I can visualize Karl sitting and sipping morning coffee from this mug and thinking about Kate back home. So lovely.
I did try growing a big beard for this mugshot so I could experience the mustache protector — it still works!
Thanks, Mom for lending me Great Grandpa Karl’s coffee mug — and for sharing this awesome story.

Mugshot Monday — “I <3 Yurts! Snow Mountain Ranch" coffee mug with NESCAFÉ Alegria coffee
Check me out — I’m all YURT-BURLY!
This last week, I stayed in a yurt in Colorado with my family at the YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch and it was awesome. I highly recommend it! No, seriously. It’s like camping, but you have electricity and the tent is already up!
Also, the mountains were amazing and there was a ton of stuff to do with Cindy and our 3 kids — zip line jumping, hiking, horseback riding, summer snow tubing (no, really!), white water rafting, and more.
By the way — The NESCAFÉ Alegria coffee is free to all guests at the Buck Board restaurant in the main lodge. It was very good. And very free.
Interesting Disclaimer: I’ve posted 236 Mugshot Mondays and this is the first one that was not taken on a Monday. I’m home in Minneapolis today, but I wanted the lovely yurts in the background for the shot! I took this on Saturday, the day we left. I miss the mountains already. And the yurt.

Mugshot Monday - “Anonymous Red Square Grid” coffee mug with Earl Grey White Tip tea by TeaSource

I bought this coffee mug two weeks ago for $.10 at a thrift store in Hayward, Wisconsin. I have no clue who made it or why, but I love it. So simple and continuous. I’m drinking this AMAZING loose leaf Earl Grey White Tip tea — highly recommend it.

Mugshot Monday - “The House on The Rock” coffee mug with Birchwood Blend by Peace Coffee
Have you ever been to The House on the Rock? If so, what was your favorite part?
I have 2 favorites:
The original house is very cool. It’s at the beginning of the tour and many people shuffle right through it. But I stop and visualize living there — reading a book in one of the nooks or drinking coffee and looking out into the valley while sitting in the infinity room.
My other favorite part is the crazy-pants carrousel and it’s sort of represented by my coffee mug even though there aren’t any actual carrousel “horses” on it! Instead there are 269 handcrafted carousel animals. The installation is mesmerizing. Take a seat and let your brain notice all the details — the mythical “horses”, the decorated mannequins flying above, the movement and the music.
Now, I’ve never indulged in a mind altering substance while looking at the carousel at The House on the Rock, but I really can’t see that helping much or being a pleasurable experience. I recommend drinking strong coffee in the morning to heighten your experience!
If you’ve never been to The House on the Rock it’s basically a massive collection of collections. And it’s terribly overwhelming! It’s equal parts Art Museum, Historical Museum and Freak Show. It’s both amazing and disturbing at the same time and you should absolutely experience it some day. Just plan to go canoeing on the serene Wisconsin River later in the day so you can contemplate what you just witnessed!

Mugshot Monday - “Deneen Pottery” coffee mug with Birchwood Blend by Peace Coffee

I love the story of this coffee mug.

I recently bumped into my Seward neighborhood Instagam buddy Squeevey — you should follow him because he takes great photos. We’d never met, but we realized through the photos we posted that we lived nearby! After chatting and high-fives, Squeevey recommends I follow his buddy at Deneen Pottery because I like coffee mugs and they make coffee mugs.

I did just that. And can I just say I totally want to get this prototype coffee mug they’re working on because it is AWESOME: The Commuter.

I digress. Basically, an Instagram follow-back and a Facebook comment later, and I’ve got a box of Deneen coffee mugs at my doorstep! I discovered I’ve featured Deneen Pottery as Mugshot Mondays before — here and here.

These coffee mugs are great. Thanks for sending me some! If you have a minute, check out this video: The Making of a Deneen Pottery Mug. So cool.

Mugshot Monday - “Mitochondrial DNA Gene Cluster Map” coffee mug by Santa Erik with Guatemalan Dark Roast by Peace Coffee
Santa Erik makes some amazing ceramics. But he’s also an incredible rollerblader, avid biker, accomplished coffee drinker, and the best Santa Claus ever.
He makes his pottery at Northern Clay Center in Seward neighborhood and sells his work on his Etsy shop or at flea markets like the one at Seward Cafe where I bought my mug. Some day I want to take ceramics again because I really enjoyed it.
Thanks for the coffee mug, Erik! It’s awesome.

Mugshot Monday - “Serene I Lost My Job” Caribou Coffee mug with Guatemalan Dark Roast by Peace Coffee
I received this lovely coffee mug last Thursday when my job was eliminated at MSP-C — I was laid off.
This coffee mug isn’t an official “LOST MY JOB” mug by Caribou (Buy one here). My friends (and former coworkers) Carly and Andy gave it to me after they heard the news about my job. I really enjoyed working at MSP-C, but most of all I really liked my coworkers. I will miss them all!
This coffee mug actually fits my mood exactly — it’s calming, it’s not happy nor is it sad, it feels like change.
Take note that I am smiling in this photo! Damn right I am.
I’ll be updating my LinkedIn and I’m very optimistic about what’s next. The punch in the gut here is that I was laid off from my previous job a year and 2 days ago. Both times I was told by senior management it was a business decision, and I believe them. I’m confident in what I do and how I do it, so I’ll be collecting myself and looking for the next opportunity! Perhaps I’m insane, but I’m actually looking forward to it.

Mugshot Monday - “Deadwood, South Dakota” coffee mug with Guatemalan Dark Roast by Peace Coffee
Now I know what a “Deadman’s Hand” is.
My friend Patty Mikres went to Deadwood, South Dakota recently and was inspired to gift me this amazing coffee mug she found! The story goes Wild Bill Hickok was shot in the back during a poker game holding a 9 of Diamonds, 8 of Spades, 8 of Clubs, Ace of Spades and Ace of Clubs — now known forever as the “Deadman’s Hand”.
I know this because it’s explained at the BOTTOM of my coffee mug:

Great story. Another Deadwood icon pictured on the mug is Calamity Jane — she was not at that fateful poker game.
I have to mention that Patty is one of my favorite people at MSP-C. She’s our receptionist and was literally the first person I met when I was interviewing almost a year ago. I liked here immediately when I met her and I like her even more now that I’ve gotten to know her. Thanks for the coffee mug, Patty!

Mugshot Monday - “Season’s Greetings” Reddit ‘Ugly Mug’ Gift Exchange coffee mug with Bat City Blend by Katz Coffee
This is the coffee mug I received from my Reddit ‘Secret Santa’ Ugly Coffee Mug exchange! It’s an amazing exchange — just check out these stats:
Total Participants: 3,745 Total Shipped: 3,561 Total Received: 2,966 Total Spent: $71,592
Incredible. But the low “total received” number was a little concerning — and I THOUGHT I was going to be one of the unlucky ones who never received a mug. However! My secret santa came through.
She wrote me a note apologizing and explained there was a small problem with shipping:

"I left your package and another package with my mother to take to the post office (she offered, which was super nice of her). Except she sent both packages to my friend! Who sent it back with a note saying "I don’t think this ugly mug is for me." I don’t really know why she didn’t call me. In the mean time, gmail was sending my reddit exchange e-mails to promotions, which I don’t look at. I fixed it. Your hideous mug with a long history and delicious coffee are coming tomorrow! So that happened."

I love that story. I also received an entire bag of Bat City Blend by Katz Coffee — I couldn’t be more happy about this. Be sure to check out all the mugs people got — MANY ARE AMAZING AND NOT UGLY! I plan to post mine very soon.

Mugshot Monday - “#Remember” [Memorial Day prototype] coffee mug with Guatemalan Dark Roast by Peace Coffee
This #Remember coffee mug is a prototype idea I had for Memorial Day. Let me know if you like it or have constructive feedback (Comment, retweet, like, call or fax me your thoughts). If enough people like it I’ll make some to give away for next year’s Memorial Day. Always #remember.
Memorial Day is such a sobering day. Wikipedia has a page tracking United States military casualties from every war we have participated in — it’s up to 1,321,612 people. That’s a lot of people who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, but that’s also a lot of families and friends who have had someone taken away from their lives. That makes me so sad. So on this day, it’s important for me to remember them — even if I don’t always agree with the policy I will always remember those who have died serving our country.
