Mugshot Monday - “Surly Brewing Company” coffee mug w/ Surly Coffee Bender at Birchwood Cafe.
Now, this is what I call a coffee break! Actually, my friend Corey and I headed over to the Birchwood Cafe to pick up some lunch, so I decided to snap a quick Mugshot Monday and share a can of Surly Coffee Bender. It’s really good beer. I got it at Birchwood a few weeks ago and they serve it in a very cool Surly glass coffee mug, which is a nice touch.
Here is Corey drinking his “half” of the Coffee Bender:

And here is the awesome can design and the other side of the mug, “It’s never too early to get surly.” Indeed.

I think I need to buy me one of those coffee mugs. But it doesn’t look like they are for sale on the Surly website. Now worries, I’ll get the Trucker Hat instead.

Q: If I already take a “GPOYM” on Mondays, can I still take a “GPOYW” on Wednesdays?
Mugshot Monday - “Monkey” coffee mug by Jim Mulfinger w/ Guatemalan Dark Roast by Peace Coffee.
This is an awesome coffee mug, and I don’t own it.
I took a close-up shot to better show off its awesomeness. It has great texture, and some really cool monkey illustrations. There are actually three similar monkeys on the mug. And you also can’t tell from the photo, but this mug is surprisingly thin and has a really cool feel to it. It’s well built. I love this mug.
It’s an original made by local artist Jim Mulfinger, who unfortunately doesn’t have a website gallery I can link to or buy my own coffee mug from. I could only find this mnartists.org page, and there isn’t much more info on Mulfinger there. He’s made an appearance at the Northern Clay Center for a show in 2007.
I’ll try to get more info on how we can all purchase his excellent coffee mugs.
My friend Kara generously lent me this mug for this week’s Mugshot Monday. A potter herself, she drinks from the Monkey coffee mug on Mondays, too — she calls it her “Monkey Monday” mug. She has a Turtle mug, too. That one is for Tuesday, of course.

This is a post-race photo of me holding the prize for winners in each age-bracket. Yes, that’s a commemorative “Gettin’ the Lead Out” Historic Run coffee mug!
My wife (Cindy) and sister (Erika) wanted to run this race on July 4th and asked me if I was interested. Maybe, I thought. And then I saw on the registration form what the winner got — I figured it was destiny for me to run this race on Sunday, win it, then post a Mugshot Monday with my new coffee mug!
I did not win. Someone named “Ben” won it. In fact, “Ben” has the Mineral Point Gettin’ the Lead Out “Best Time Ever” in the 2 mile race for the 30-39 year old group. He ran it in 10 minutes and some change. My new nemesis — I want that coffee mug. (Hey, I’m joking, yo.)
Anyway, I was really happy with my time — it was an unofficial 16 minutes 18 seconds. We had heard the 2 mile run was “hilly”, and we decided it was actually slightly less than “mountainous”. OMG. The first mile was all uphill. And it was HOT! Still, we all did really good and were happy with our efforts! It was really fun to do this with Cindy and Erika. I may try running more races.
Here’s a post-race group photo I took of me, Cindy, and Erika in front of a sweet tank that sits in Soldiers Memorial Park in Mineral Point, WI where the finish line was.

Mugshot Monday - “Chrysler” coffee mug(s) w/ Folgers Gourmet Selections Bistro Blend Medium Roast coffee.
Another late day post of Mugshot Monday due to traveling in the unfriendly AT&T areas of Wisconsin! But persistence is a virtue.
And here it is: Two coffee mugs including a guest mugshot by my UWEC college buddy Kelly Rose! We stopped by her parents’ cabin near Wisconsin Dells on the way back home this morning — we had coffee and some O & H Kringle, which is really good stuff, imported to the Dells from Racine. (Apparently, Obama likes that Kringle, too.)
The rain let up enough for us to go outside for the mugshot — you can see drops forming on the coffee mugs. I wanted us to stand in front of that SWEET fake metallic cactus statue thingy. Turned out to be a nice shot. And it was awesome to see our friend Kelly and her family again. I hate when good friends live far away, but love when conversation picks up like it’s only been a day. Love that.
DISCLAIMER: I should note that I’ve never owned a Chrysler vehicle. But! My High School buddy Dave had a 1970ish green Chevy Nova, which was a very positive experience for me. That was an awesome car.

Mugshot Monday - “Cute Kittens Playing Cute and Hearts and Cute Bows” coffee mug w/ Eight O’Clock coffee.
We went to the cabin this weekend, my wife’s parent’s cabin, near Minong, Wisconsin. This mug with cute kittens has been there forever, and has always been a favorite of mine. There are other coffee mugs with muskies, bass, and trout, and there is another one that says, “To My Secretary”. Most of the coffee mugs made it to the cabin like the other dishes and utensils and pots and pans — they were the odds and ends that were taken out of the rotation at home. Functional, yet not as… exquisite. “Cabin-ware.”
If you are a cat lover (I am not) you become short of breath when you see this mug. The kittens are playing so lovingly. I know this, because there are hearts on the mug. I think it is an action shot, because the heads of the kittens are elongated to show their playful dexterity. Is the kitten on the left fixing the bow of the kitten on the right?
These types of questions make this mug awesome.
Nobody knows where this coffee mug came from. Maybe it came with flowers a long time ago? There is no credit on the bottom of the coffee mug. Artist unknown. Distributor unknown. Origin of manufacturing unknown. A Google Images Search came up empty.
This coffee mug lives on as an undiscovered legend, at a cabin in Minong. So I sip coffee from it every chance I get.

Mugshot Monday - “RockStar Dad” coffee mug by Patricia Carlin w/ Blendo Suave coffee by Peace Coffee.
I received this coffee mug from my three boys Sunday morning for Father’s Day, along with pancakes, cut-out cookies (letters, spelling “Dad Rocks’), cards, and a bag of peanut m&m’s. It was a great day — we spent the morning at the Minnesota Zoo.
I snapped a photo of a prairie dog that cracks me up everytime I look at it, and a photo of a sea otter during feeding time. I took a buncha other pictures of the kids at the zoo, too, but have not posted any yet. They loved the “Russia’s Grizzly Coast” exhibit — I highly recommend you check that out.
Getting the mug and the cards and the cookies and the m&m’s (I’m a total sucker for peanut m&m’s, my wife and kids know this) was special. But we’ve had pancakes before, and we’ve gone to the zoo before and had as much fun as we did yesterday. But I found that it all made me smile a little bigger than on those “normal” days. And that was awesome. I totally felt like a Rock Star.
One note: I’d like to point out that I am not yet balding like the stage-diving dad depicted in the coffee mug. However my ‘love-handles’ are definitely more prominent than those of the stage-diving dad depicted in the coffee mug.
“RockStar Dad” coffee mug is illustrated by Patricia Carlin, sold by Uncommon Goods.

Mugshot Monday - “Gordon C. Krause Cattail” coffee mug w/Twin Cities Blend by Peace Coffee.
This coffee mug was made by my mother’s cousin Gordy Krause. He’s a great guy, and an awesome potter.
Gordy runs Fireworks Pottery out of Sheboygan, Wisconsin with his wife Jean and sells his wares at art fairs and by order online. We always buy his wind chimes for friends who bought a new house. We also commissioned him to make our house numbers.
He’s done some really nice work for churches, too. You can see many of these pieces on his website here.
This coffee mug unfortunately has been relegated to my display case — it has a large crack on one side (non-facing side in the photo). The mug still holds coffee, though! I was able to drink my Peace Coffee today without incident.

Mugshot Monday - “Peace Coffee 100% Fair Trade” glass mug w/Twin Cities Blend by Peace Coffee.
I forgot my milk today. I do like milk in my coffee — I use Silk Unsweetend Soy Milk to be specific. And I drink soy milk because I have high-ish cholesterol. Anyway, as it turned out, today was an okay day to forget the milk because I liked how awesome the Peace Coffee logo on the glass mug looks against black coffee. We’ll just chalk it up as destiny, I guess.
Sidenote: Check out the photo I accidently snapped whilst catching my iPhone from the same photoshoot as the above photo. Is it art?
I was outside, taking a photo of myself for Mugshot Monday, and my iPhone slipped out of my hand. I managed to catch it before it hit the ground, but noticed I took a picture when I caught it! Kind of cool.
That’s grass, by the way.
UPDATE: Here’s the Mugshot Monday shot from the same photoshoot.
Mugshot Monday - “1955 Murray Champion” mug w/Organic Guatemalan Dark Roast by Peace Coffee.
It’s Memorial Day. And I don’t have a coffee mug with an American Flag on it, which is an oversight. I think this one (right) is nice and simple — dig it. Or there is this “Memorial Day Personalized Coffee Mug”, but they don’t seem to have one for 2010. Maybe next year.
I should really plan ahead for these holiday coffee mug opportunities.
So I borrowed this awesome 1955 Murray Champion coffee mug from my friend Brian Cornell. I grew up in the Big Wheel era, so I never actually got to drive one of these when I was little, but how cool are these? And back in the day, you know they were made with good ole durable (and heavy!) American steel.
I found some cool photos of restored vintage pedal cars that are up for auction, so you can get your hands on one of the originals. Love the design. Depending on condition, looks like the bids start at around $150 - $300.
Of course, you can choose from dozens of new pedal cars on Amazon, but I bet it doesn’t weigh half as much as the original.
(Sidenote: Identify your vintage pedal car on PedalCar.com.)

Looking for old tweets? You won’t find any that are more than a week or so old on Twitter. Put the blame on all the massive number of new tweets coming in. The engines, they canna hold captain! Or that is, the search index behind Twitter Search can’t hold it all.
From Where Have All The Old Tweets Gone?, an article I found when I noticed that tweets older than 6 days were not showing up in Twitter search results. It’s curious that the article (published in January 2010) concludes the 6 day throttle because I only just noticed this problem on May 24 — I tweet about #mugshotmonday every Monday, and I always search the hashtag before I post. Last Monday was the first time that last week’s mugshot tweet did not show up.
I understand why Twitter is throttling the index. But only 6 days of data? That’s not very useful, especially when I’m searching for more important things than my own mugshot.
Mugshot Monday - “Padilla Speer Beardsley” mug w/French Roast by Peace Coffee.
I stole this coffee mug.
Last week, I was at Padilla Speer Beardsley to be on “The Role of PR in the New Age of Multimedia Journalism” panel. We had a great discussion, and I mentioned at the end to all the PR professionals attending to send me their client’s coffee mugs. That I need more coffee mugs for the Mugshot Monday project. I even stated I was going to steal the one I was drinking from.
Okay, I did actually secure official clearance to “take” the mug from a Padilla Speer Beardsley associate, as long as I used it for a Mugshot. Criminal charges will not be filled. Today, at least.

Post-panel photo from the “The Role of PR in the New Age of Multimedia Journalism” event put on by Minnesota PRSA.
Left to right: Me (Head Nerd at MinnPost.com), Mark Reilly (managing editor of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal), and Jason DeRusha, online social media sensation and reporter at WCCO-TV.
I really enjoy doing these panels, but need to polish up — Mark and Jason are seasoned pros, um, and they kinda know, um, kinda how to work their, um, points better with an audience. I need to stop saying, “um.” Thank you to the kind people who came up to me after to say I did a good job.
PR Peeps Should Stalk Media Peeps Before Pitching
Seemed like the big take-away from the panel for PR professionals was to follow writers/editors/publications on social media platforms so you can target your pitch better. The panel agreed that Twitter was the best venue. If you can help a writer save 30 minutes or an hour for a piece by providing relevant information, they will take notice, and possibly use your info. Also, Jason had a great take about how news peeps don’t have time to meet PR peeps face to face over coffee anymore:
Today there is no coffee shop. The coffee shop is now Twitter and Facebook.
Speaking of Coffee…
The other big take-away was (literally) a Padilla Speer Beardsley coffee mug, which I subconsciously announced I was going to steal for next week’s Mugshot Monday. The event was held at the very cool Padilla Speer Bearsley space. Now I’ve got two more coffee mugs, and then I’m week to week.
For the record, I got permission to steal the coffee mug.
Many thanks to Jason Sprenger for inviting me to be on the panel. Oh, and here’s a funny TwitPic from the event taken by Lisa Grimm where Mark and I are mesmerized by Jason’s zest.
Mugshot Monday - “City Pages Online - Click on this.” mug w/ Birchwood Blend by Peace Coffee.
There are two comments I will make about this coffee mug:
1) This mug kinda sucks. Just look at it. The web address at the top even contains ‘http://’ in it. And the word “this” is “hyper-linked, as if I would enjoy a cup of coffee and would think to visit “http://www.citypages.com” after I read “Click on this.” Also, you can see that I have to awkwardly hold this coffee mug as I attempt to show you what it says. That’s a similar problem this Star Tribune coffee mug has. Also, why use the Courier font? WHY?
2) I designed this coffee mug. It was around 1995 or 1996, and my boss’s boss, City Pages publisher Tom Bartel, had recently relaunched citypages.com and wanted to make some swag and an ad campaign. I was a (print) graphic designer in the production department and wasn’t really online yet. I was (rightfully) enamored with clicking on the underlined blue links that connected the interwebs. And that “http://” used to be important, man. We ran big full page ads in City Pages with “Click on this.” It was huge. Note the use of “CITY PAGES ONLINE” — the thinking was that the web site was an addition, something new, it needed it’s own logo, this was not “CITY PAGES PRINT”, yo. Check out the CP home page back then on Wayback Machine. (WOW!). So, this mug makes sense for the era maybe and doesn’t suck too much. However, I will always lament not making a cooler one.
