I made this mug in 1991 while studying abroad in Osaka, Japan at Kansai Gaidai. My sensei, Yoshio Inomata, was this incredible instructor who learned to speak English with his students by teaching his Japanese Ceramics course over the years. His hands were like clay.

All of my mugs died in the kiln because I couldn’t make the damn handles work. I really wanted a mug, so I made one without a handle. And I thought it would be a good idea to somehow indicate which way was the front of the mug, so I chose the Japanese Kanji character “Mae”, which means ‘Front’ or ‘Before’, as art.

Other than being a little difficult to hold, this has become one of my favorite mugs.

If you’re posting someone else’s work, credit them. Don’t deliberately remove the name of the artist. That’s just wrong. If your reasoning is that it’s own personal scrapbook — then keep it personal, not public. If it’s public, the least you can do is credit the artist and link back to their site, or at least their Wikipedia entry.

When I see something I like not credited — I try to track down the source, if for no other reason than to find more art by the same person. Consider this a small payback to the artist whose art you liked enough to post on your Tumblr. Use Tineye to track down original visual art — it’s easy to use, and takes no more than 10 seconds to do a search.

And that was your PSA for today. In the next episode: public shaming.

Love, Nikola

Totally agree with Nikola, and I try to do the same thing — try to track down the source. It’s important.
I took my first sip from this mug in 1990 in a 6th floor dorm room in Towers Hall North on the upper campus of the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. This girl I had met had a personal coffee maker along with a few choice mugs.

She’d buy her own coffee and brew up a pot whenever she wanted in her dorm room. This stood out to me as being really cool. First, college kids don’t have a lot of money, and beans ain’t cheap, but she decided drinking really good coffee was important. Second, most college kids had a microwave (not me, but my roommate did) and a mini-refrigerator (not me, but my roommate did), and here was someone who had their very own coffee maker? Dig.

Me and this girl eventually dated, and now we live together because we’re married, and I keep this crappy little Pizza Hut coffee mug around for sentimental reasons. It’s “crappy” because it’s too small for coffee and it’s plastic. But it’s actually pretty awesome to me because it brings back good memories. Reminds me of when my wife was my girlfriend and reminds me of all my college friends and of all the great times we had.

Cable carriage, network airwaves, newsstand distribution and printing presses: all very expensive, so once you employ enough capital to gain them, it’s damn hard to get knocked out.

The web changed all that and promised that economics in the media business would be driven by content and intent: the best content will win, driven by the declared intent of consumers who find it and share it. Search+Social was the biggest wave to hit media since the printing press. And the open technology to make better and better experiences has been on a ten year tear: blogging software, Flash, Ajax, HTML 5, Android, and more and more coming.

But the iPad, just like the iPhone, is designed for vertical integration and distribution lock in. Apple is building its own distribution channel, just as it did with iTunes, and media companies are falling over themselves to make an app for that.

But the real reason media companies love the iPad is the same reason I don’t: It’s an old school, locked in distribution channel that doesn’t want to play by the new rules of search+social.
”

- “I Don’t Like The iPad Because…” by John Battelle, February 27, 2010
