Mugshot Monday - “Urban Bean Coffee” travel coffee mug with Colombia - La Argentina by Dogwood Coffee
I had never been to the Lyndale Avenue Urban Bean Coffee before, and chances are you haven’t either. That’s because they’re only two months into opening the new site. I happened to stop in when Greg (owner?) was working the counter and chatted him up about the new shop.
Well, we ended up talking about coffee shops these days in general, but before I get to that, he gave me the cliff-notes history of Urban Bean Coffee — Old location on Hennepin Avenue is done; Coffee shop on Bryant Ave is booming; New coffee shop on Lyndale is digging in to the neighborhood and introducing themselves to it’s new neighbors.
The new location is the old location of Muddy Waters Coffee Shop, which is now a restaurant at a different location. Or something like that.
Speaking of how things change, Greg and I got to talking about how coffee shops these days are so different from coffee shops in the 90s. People came to talk and get a coffee and smoke and grab a newspaper or sketch or write in a notebook. Now, they put their earbuds in, open their laptops, connect to wi-fi, get some work done, or blog or sketch or create digitally. People would call the coffee shop to see if their friends were there. These days, Greg only gets calls from sales folks trying to sell him the latest greatest latte machine.
To be clear, Greg and I were not lamenting the change, just noticing the change — coffee shops are different because people’s routines are different. You’ll notice at Urban Bean that every table has it’s own personal outlet. Smoking is illegal in buildings, printed newspapers are not what they used to be, soooooo much is going on digitally now days it can not be ignored, and you know where your friends are because you got a Foursquare alert on your cellphone. Interesting.
Greg isn’t done yet with the renovations at the Lyndale location — most of the wall space is blank. But you’ll notice the awesome squirrel drawing behind me — there will be more of that going up in the future.
Also, that’s an Urban Bean original travel coffee mug — they have shirts and other cool stuff with the similar art as the squirrel. Very cool.
Urban Bean Coffee is Coffee Shop #7 in Vita.mn’s list of “Best Coffee Hangouts” — I’m going to all of them for my Mugshot Mondays in the coming weeks (see progress here and scroll down).

Used to spend hours at “old” Urban Bean & Muddy Waters, writing w/pen & paper. Something has been lost, I think, but that’s progress. And I’m a dinosaur.
