Help me understand HOW I can communicate with Tumblr friends

Occasionally, I get a REPLY on one of my Tumblr posts. And then I want to reply back. I can not do this through Tumblr (right?), so I try to follow them on Twitter and hope they follow me back so I can send them a Direct Message.
That’s rediculous ridiculous.
I’ve tried using the ASK feature, but then sometimes the person PUBLISHES my question. That’s okay sometimes, but not okay other times.
Am I missing something? How can I communicate with Tumblr friends?
UPDATE: Here are some of the suggestions and some of my reactions:
- This irony of this post is maddening: People are making suggestions and I can’t reply to them publicly or privately! Blerg. (Yes, swirlspice, you got me!)
- (via Twitter) soupsoup suggests I try the Missing “e”, the unofficial browser extension for Tumblr. It allows you to reply to replies. I will try this. However, the extension is not endorsed by Tumblr, so I am concerned it may be rendered unusable in the future. But, I’ll install it and kick the tires.
- wearaboot and cutlerish say use the Tumblr ASK feature and make it clear I want the correspondence to be PRIVATE. I’ve tried that before, and my correspondence ends up getting published. Honestly, I don’t think it’s malicious. Instead, I think the recipient of my question wants to answer, but doesn’t know how! So they publish their answer so I can read it. Makes sense to me, but oy!
- erikostrom suggests using DISQUS comments. I like DISQUS, but it just feels so disconnected from Tumblr. Mostly because they don’t show up in the Tumblr Dashboard.
Any other suggestions?

I want to reply, just to further frustrate you.

erikostrom answered:
You could install Disqus comments on your Tumblr. I usually look for that before using REPLY. But yeah, it’s a weird failing of Tumblr.

cutlerish answered:
If you want to do it privately, it is usually best to send an ask with the prefix “PRIVATE”

wearaboot answered:
I think ask is usually the best. If you don’t want it to be published, just tell them!

Start by spelling ridiculous correctly ;-)
